Learn About the Vignette

The Most Important Facts at a Glance

Mandatory for Highways

A valid vignette is required before entering any Swiss motorway or 'autostrasse'. Ensure you have it affixed before you begin your journey on these roads.

Annual Validity

The 2024 vignette is valid from December 1, 2023, until January 31, 2025. This covers a period exceeding a full calendar year.

Stick It On!

The vignette must be permanently affixed to the inside of your windshield for it to be considered valid. Using tape or any other temporary fixing is strictly not allowed.

Avoid Fines

Driving on a Swiss motorway without a valid and properly affixed vignette can result in a significant fine of CHF 200, in addition to the mandatory purchase of a new vignette on the spot.

Have More Questions?

Q: Do I need a vignette for a rental car?

A: Typically, rental cars registered in Switzerland will already have a valid vignette. However, it's crucial to confirm this with your rental agency before driving on motorways. For rental cars from neighboring countries, you will almost certainly need to purchase one.

Q: Where can I buy the vignette?

A: Vignettes can be purchased at border crossings, post offices, petrol stations, and larger garages throughout Switzerland and in neighboring countries close to the border. It's recommended to buy it before entering Switzerland if possible.

Q: What if I forget to buy a vignette and I'm already on the motorway?

A: If you are caught without a valid vignette on a Swiss motorway, you will be subject to a fine of CHF 200 and required to purchase a new vignette immediately. It's always best to acquire one before entering a motorway.
